A portable air cooler is a device that utilizes evaporative cooling to provide an air stream that is cooler than the surrounding air. Air coolers, often called evaporative or swamp cooler, have a few main parts: the water tank holds water to be used in the cooling process, the wick absorbs water from the water tank and allows it to evaporate when air is blown over it, and the fan blows air over the wick and the water held in the wick.

The air stream that it provides is cooler than the ambient temperature, but once you step outside the air stream, you will no longer feel the cooling effects. However, an air cooler does not require a vent as an air conditioner would, and you do not need to empty any condensation bucket.
