EdgeStar 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Anti-Bacterial Silver Ion Filter 4.5 5 50 88
Works Great Modified in a French Window I have lived in my current apartment in Los Angeles for seven years. I do not have AC and although I love my apartment, when those hot days come (I live on the second floor and am facing west) it is brutal. I also have the beautiful old French windows that will not accommodate a normal window AC. After much research, I devised a plan to attempt to install this unit into one of my living room windows with the intent of cooling the living room and dining room only (approximately 450 sq ft total space with 14 ft ceiling.) I will share information on how I achieved this so it may help someone else looking to do the same thing. I'm not a HGTV mastermind, so I went the simplest route possible. I purchased a piece of 40" X 60" white foam board and cut to size to fill the space left over in the window frame after placement of the AC window kit. I taped aluminum foil on the outside of the board to help reflect the sunlight. I weather stripped both the edges of the board and the window kit for a better seal placing the board on top of the window kit which is horizontally placed in the bottom of the window frame. I then used white duct tape to create an additional seal around the board to window frame, kit to window frame and kit to board. I also used white duct tape on the connections between the hose and kit and hose and AC to get more efficiency/close off any leaks. As I wanted to be as aesthetically pleasing as possible, I found a beautiful shear lemon curtain to hang inside the window frame on top of the board/above where the hose connects to the kit to make it pretty. My plan is to leave the setup from spring to late fall. Honestly, on really cool days, it seems pretty closed off, so I may just leave it up permanently. We are having our first major heat wave this week, so I wanted to wait to see how it would perform in really hot weather before I gave the AC a review. I can say the temperature has gotten as high as 96 degrees during the day time, and so far the AC is working great. As I get home a bit after six #it has still been at least 90 at this time of day this week#, the AC is showing a max temp of no more than 80 degrees dropping as the hours progress into the 70s. The fans with temperature readouts in other areas of my home are showing mid-90s. Just as a note, even when I'm home all day, the hottest part of the day in my apartment is late afternoon as the heat rises later on in the day. Also, I have the AC set up so that I can direct it toward my couch if I'm watching TV, and I've actually had to get out a blanket! For someone who was used to placing ice cubes on her face during heat waves #the temperature would easily top 100 inside#, this is a drastic improvement! My apartment was built in 1927 and has terrible insulation, so my goal was to get some relief as opposed to creating an Artic effect, and I'm glad to say I have done that! Also, for those who have complained about the noise level, I would say it is definitely no louder than most window AC units and perhaps not as loud as many. However, I would have taken a roaring train if it had meant staying cool. I've had the AC a little over a month now, and have used it intermittently during that time up until this week. I haven't had to drain the AC as of yet, so can't speak to that. It's fairly dry here, so I don't know how much of an issue that will be. I've attached some pics. As an FYI, I did not remove the screen from my window #it's so old the nails are rusted into the wood#, and I've had no problems venting as there is some space between the kit and screen. May 1, 2014
Time will tell I just purchase this AC, as of now it works great. I will review it again at the end of summer. April 16, 2014
Comment This product works very well for us and our needs. August 29, 2013
Great buy on a nice A/C I bought the AP14001HS model A/C a few months ago for the top floor of my house to help control my allergies at night. I decided having the doors/windows open on the first floor of the house to cool it was not condusive to good cooling/allergy control on the second floor so I bought this model for the first floor of my house. While this model is a 12,000 instead of a 14,000 I don't really notice a difference in cooling potential, both work just as well. I liked this model because it specifically comes with special filters to help filter the pollen out of the air and I think it works EXCELLENT for that purpose. I live in Colorado in the foothills west of Denver so a low humidty area which means I don't have the same problems with water accumulation as some others do. But this one is vented out of a window that faces into the sun all afternoon and it has no problem cooling the room. I don't usually even turn it on before I get home, it cools fast enough once I arrive that I can be fairly cool within 30 minutes of arriving home and totally cool within an hour. This one is a bit louder than the 14,000 but still not horrible. I do have to turn the television volume up a couple clicks if I am sitting in my recliner right next to the A/C but sitting anywhere else in the room I can hear the television fine at the same level. This one is used in my living room, which is a big open room into the dining room and kitchen. It cools the whole area (probably 500 sq ft) quite well after an hour or so, though the living room where it sits is definitely the best room to cool off in. August 21, 2013
