Broil King Countertop Cast Iron Range 4.4 5 5 5
Broil King 1500 watt cooktop delivers This unit is probably the best available anywhere. It cooks better and much more evenly than my Maytag range (electric coil type), which surprised me. The Broil King heats up fast and its "0 to 12" variable heat dial is reliably linear and accurate. The unit's construction is rugged and professional, and features non-slip, non-marring feet. The unit's rough-textured cooking surface is a mixed blessing: It is not slippery, which is good, but challenging to clean if food gets on it. If the element is cold when it happens, I use a damp lint-free cloth and then blot dry. If any fibers are left, a few flicks with a nylon vegetable brush will remove them. I have not dropped food on the element when hot, and hope I never do, but my plan is to gently scrape off as much as possible, then allow what's left to dry/burn to an ash, let cool completely, then use a nylon brush to clean. It would certainly interrupt the cooking process. Therefore, the difficult-to-clean cooking surface is the ONLY drawback (and a minor one, in my opinion) to this otherwise outstanding unit. I use it in my "outdoor kitchen" and its performance is far superior to anything I've used in the past. This unit is powerful, so be sure to supply it with at least a 15-amp grounded circuit that isn't supplying "juice" to anything else. Then, crank it up and cook! May 10, 2011
It does what we expected. works fine. Does what it was made to do. Quality is fine so far. October 7, 2008
Perfect for canning foods. Just what we We have a glass cooktop and cannot use a pressure cooker. This product has the most BTU's of all a the products we resurched. It is also compact enough to store in a small cabinate space. It's a good buy. July 19, 2008
Works for pressure canner I searched high and low for an affordable "fifth burner" to accommodate my 7-quart pressure canner since I have a ceramic top stove and can't use it on there. Most were too small and had low wattage. The canner wouldn't fit right on a two-burner. I was told by some consumer rep to buy this 1500 watt burner. I balked at the price, but finally ordered it. Today I preheated my green beans in water, then put them in jars hot, with hot water covering them and two quarts of hot water to process, per instructions. It took about an hour for the pressure to come up and the 20 minutes of processing to be complete. I can only green beans and tomato juice. I will use the canner as a hot water bath processing, without pressure. I expect it to work well. The unit is small and easy to store. I'm sure it takes quite a bit of electricity compared to the stove, which is 220 volt, but at least it works. It is sure better than using a turkey cooker, which some people recommended. It is simple and does the job, thank goodness. June 24, 2008

    A:
The cast-iron cooking surface maintains the selected heat setting VERY well and there is no noticeable cycling on and off -- and I know what you mean and how annoying it is. That said, just as with an electric oven, the unit has an indicator light that shows when power is being applied and when it is not. The process is silent and the food stays at your desired temperature. So don't let the unit's thermostat function be a deterrent to buying one of these units. You won't be sorry.
