Opposite to the traditional compressor-based cooling and refrigerant, a thermoelectric wine cooler will contain a cooling node – simply a ceramic tile through which an electric current passes. As the current passes through the cooling node, the outside of the tile heats up while the inside cools down. This side faces the cooler and provides the cold air that gets pumped through it.
Generally, thermoelectric coolers contain small fans that help to evenly distribute the cold air throughout the interior of the cooler. In contract to compressor-based models, thermoelectric coolers create fewer vibrations which will inevitably equal fewer disturbances in the sediment of each wine bottle. Even though they are usually quieter than compressor models, it must be noted that thermoelectric wine coolers are not completely silent, as the internal fans produce noise when they need to distribute cold air through the unit.
An LED, or light-emitting diode, can create light by manipulating the movement of electricity along the path of a semiconductor. Now found on nearly every electronic device, these lights work very similar to standard light bulbs, but LEDs are much smaller, brighter and longer-lasting than conventional bulbs. LEDs don’t get hot, which is perfect for use in coolers and refrigerators, where heat can be counter-productive to the purpose of the product. Due to their energy efficiency, LEDs require far less electric power than traditional lighting.
Manufactured through a process of extreme heating and rapid cooling, tempered glass is harder than normal glass. This makes it more durable, as tempered glass is four to five times stronger than standard glass and does not break into sharp shards when it breaks.
Adjustable thermostats come standard on every wine cooler so you can adjust the cooler’s internal temperature. Thermostats are extremely important for preserving red and white wines because different wines call for different storage temperatures. Some coolers have a single thermostat while others come with 2 or 3 independent thermostats to preserve different types of wine within one unit. Thermostats can come in both digital and manual (dial) formats.
Developed to be more energy efficient, thermopane glass doors consist of two glass panes that contain air or gas sealed between them. This makes the glass stronger than one pane glass door, and they are warm to the touch so it minimizes the potential of frost and condensation in the interior pane of your cooler.
Tinted glass, especially ultraviolet (UV) resistant, protects aging wine from sunlight. UV light is harmful to wine because it degrades organic compounds, which can ruin the wine’s flavor. Sparkling wine is more sensitive to light than other types of wine and should be stored in the darkest parts of a wine refrigerator. It is still recommended that all wine refrigerators, even those with tinted glass, be kept away from direct sunlight as the heat from the light can keep the wine refrigerator from reaching optimal temperatures.
Auto-defrosting is a technique which regularly defrosts the evaporator in a refrigerator or freezer to allow built-up ice to melt away. The auto-defrost element is compact and separated from the main cabinet space, allowing it to be heated for short periods of time.
